Childcare Diary of New Dad

10. What is Maternity leave?

The previous story is here!

Now that I have a general understanding of childcare leave, let's check Maternity leave!

Maternity leave is Prenatal leave and Postnatal leave.

I see.

I didn't know Maternity leave is divided into Prenatal leave and Postnatal leave.

The pamphlet of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan describes Prenatal and Postnatal leave as follows.

You can take prenatal leave can take from 6 weeks before the expected date of delivery (14 weeks for twins and above) if you request it.

On the other hand, it is written that you are prohibited from working for 8 weeks from the day after giving birth on postnatal leave.

Well, Since pregnant women give birth to babies, if we do not strictly prohibit it, some could be forced to work or some could work in spite of feeling bad.

By the way, I tried to find out if there are benefits for maternity leave as well as childcare leave benefits.

Apparently, benefits that can be received differ depending on a social insurance that the person who give birth to a baby has, as shown in below.

Work health insurance, Welfare pension
Spouse's health insurance support
National health insurance

In the case of my wife, it is "Work health insurance, Welfare pension", so I checked it on the website of the Japan Health Insurance Association.

It is described in various Q & A formats, and if you do not pay your salary due to maternity leave, you can receive maternity allowance when you apply.

Maternity allowance will be paid within the range from 42 days before the date of birth to 56 days after the day after the date of birth, during the period when you were absent from work and not paid your salary.

In short, you can receive maternity allowance for the maximum number of days for each of prenatal and postnatal leave, including the date of birth.

Yeah, this is soooo nice.

Daily maternity allowance is calculated as follows.

【Average standard monthly income for the 12 months prior to the payment start date】÷ 30days × (2/3)

Standard monthly income includes overtime allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, etc. in addition to basic salary, as when calculating childcare leave benefits.

In addition, social insurance premiums are exempted if you complete the procedure, also you are unpaid, you will not be charged employment insurance premiums.

It is safe to assume that maternity allowance per day will be paid the same amount of childcare leave benefits (until the 6th month) per day !

Resident tax is not exempted in the ward where I live, but it seems that it depends on the municipality, so please check the homepage of the government office where you live.

Next time, I'll calculate the amount of money we can receive during Maternity and Childcare leave!
