31. Babymoon ~Taking a little Peek Into Hell~

The previous story is here!

Day 2 of our babymoon.

Since the hotel check-out time was 10:00 a.m. and it was a little early to go home, we decided to stop by Mount Nokogiri, famous for "Nihon-ji Temple" and the "Peep Into Hell".

Within 10minutes of starting to drive, we arrived at Mt. Nokogiri parking lot. haha

We parked our car in the free parking lot near the East Entrance Administration Office and started walking with my wife to the "Peep Into Hell" at the top of the mountain.

As soon as we entered, there was the Great Buddha made of stone, and it was soooo huge!!haha

Mt. Nokogiri, Nihon-ji Temple Buddha statue (31.05m high)

I found out that the Great Buddha at Mt. Nokogiri, Nippon-ji Temple is 31.05meters tall, which is larger than the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple (14.98meters) and Great Buddha statue in Kamakura (11.3meters).

This Great Buddha at this Nihon-ji Temple is said to be the largest stone Buddha carved directly into a rock wall in Japan.
Reference: ANA Travel Planner

By the way, the world's largest stone Buddha carved directly into a rock wall is the Leshan Giant Buddha in China, which is a whopping 71meters high. hahaha

Well, we live in such a big world. hahaha

We left the Great Buddha behind and started walking again toward the top of the mountain.

On the path to the top of the mountain, there were many sights to see, including a shrine to the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) and a staircase carved out of the bedrock.

Rock Tunnel, Niten Gate

The gradient here is steep, so it was a great workout. hahaha

We walked at a leisurely pace, taking breaks along the way, so it took us about an hour to reach the top of the mountain after we left the parking lot.

I'm off to look into hell for a bit.

In the foreground is a place called "Peep Into Hell" where a rocky outcrop juts out into the air.

"What the hell is that?" I walked boldly toward it and I fond a great view of Tokyo Bay and the Boso Peninsula!!

The great view from "Peep Into Hell"

However, it is sooooo frightening to look directly down.

You can see the rocky area 100m directly below.

A peek into hell from "Peep Into Hell". hehe

Of course, if you fall, it will be more than painful. haha

Certainly, I felt like I was peeking into hell. haha

There is a place where you can see "Peep Into Hell" from a little distance, and from there you can see how terrifying it is. hehehe

It took us about an hour to descend Mt. Nokogiri, which has much to offer outside of the top of the mountain, and return to the parking lot.

And, on the way home.

We had a crepe at the parking area "Umihotaru" and made it home safely. hehehe
